Powering ahead

Brush Traction is in the process of commissioning a power unit test facility at its Loughborough works, the only one in the UK capable of analysing MTU engines. It has been designed for the MTU power units in East Coast’s HSTs, with each one undergoing testing approximately every 22,500 hours as part of its QL4 engine exam.

The units are controlled and monitored from an adjacent cabin that not only allows engineers to observe them directly through a window but also view a number of CCTV camera angles. Using the control desk, Brush’s engineers are able to increase the power unit to notch 5, just as if it was being driven on the East Coast Main Line, enabling them to monitor how it behaves under running conditions.
