Contracts have been signed for the extension of Milan’s M5 line. Majority shareholders Astaldi Group signed a new concession agreement along with Anslado (STS & Breda), Alstom, ATM and Finmeccanica. The extension will see the line linking to San Siro which holds the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
The Ministry of Infrastructure, City of Milan and private investors are funding the €872m project. As well as the construction of the new metro line, this includes necessary infrastructure works and train driving technology.
Currently, the original Metro 5 line is still under development and is expected to open later this year. The construction of the first 6km began in 2007, running from Bignami to Garibaldi through 9 metro stations.
The new agreement includes an extension of the current line by a further 7km and will also include 10 new stations. The trains themselves will benefit from driver-less technology and be automatic thanks to Finmeccanica.
The latest part of the project is estimated to take nearly 5 years to complete.
