Electronic information screens and platform announcement equipment is being installed along the Abbey Line in the latest phase of an investment programme.

The latest £300,000 investment along the Abbey Line, which runs between Watford Junction and St Albans, has been funded by rail operator London Midland and is part of the Quality Rail Partnership the company has with Hertfordshire County Council.

London Midland, Hertfordshire County Council and the Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership have already funded new waiting shelters, new signage, poster cases and improved accessibility along the line. St Albans Abbey Station has been completely modernised and work begins this year to improve facilities at the Watford end of the line.

In addition to funding, the work of dedicated local volunteers through the Community Rail Partnership has been crucial in the development and continued success of the Abbey Line.

Work to install the customer information screens has already begun at Bricket Wood and Watford North stations and will continue over the next few weeks at Watford Junction, Garston, How Wood, Park Street and St Albans Abbey.

London Midland commercial director Alex Hynes said: “We understand information is critical to allow our passengers to make choices and plan their travel more effectively. Working with our partners at Hertfordshire County Council and the Abbey Line CRP we’ve been able to achieve that.

“This latest investment means that passengers travelling along the Abbey Line will be able to enjoy accurate, real-time information via electronic displays and platform announcements.”

Stuart Pile, Executive Member for Highways and Transport, said: “The latest additions that London Midland has made to the Abbey Line will benefit everyone using the service. With passenger numbers rising every year, it’s important that the information about the service is as accessible and accurate as possible.”
