CrossCountry Trains has announced that Torquay and Paignton are to receive two extra trains on Saturdays this summer, including the return of a direct connection with Scotland.
Between 28 May and 10 September, train operator CrossCountry will be redirecting to Paignton two trains that would normally travel to Plymouth. These extra services are specifically intended to carry tourists to Torbay from Yorkshire, the North East and Scotland. In addition to Torquay and Paignton, the new CrossCountry summer timetable includes extra stops at Dawlish and Teignmouth; and Dawlish Warren will be served by a train from Manchester and one from the North East and Scotland.
Commenting on the new services, CrossCountry managing director Andy Cooper said: “These extra trains will give a welcome boost to the region’s tourist industry over the busy summer months. We have seen growing demand for journeys to the English Riviera and our new timetable will provide over 1800 extra seats to and from Paignton on Saturdays during the holiday season.
“We have seen amazing support from local businesses, councils and politicians for our timetable plans. We will now work with these stakeholders to encourage tourists to take advantage of the great value offers available and make their journey to the region by direct train.”
The new services are a 0600 departure from Leeds, calling at Dawlish (1101), Teignmouth (1107), Newton Abbot (1116), Torquay (1129) and Paignton (1136); and the 0601 from Glasgow, calling at Dawlish Warren (1500), Dawlish (1505), Teignmouth (1512), Newton Abbot (1520), Torquay (1532) and Paignton (1540). Going north there will be a 1234 departure from Paignton to Glasgow and a 1634 to Leeds.
