Paul Plummer, Network Rail’s Director, Planning and Development, said:

“Network Rail welcomes the Government’s announcement to electrify the Great Western to Cardiff. More passengers will soon reap the benefits that electrified lines bring with quieter, smoother, greener and more reliable journeys.

“Our plans to deliver electrification schemes for the Great Western as well as schemes between Liverpool, Manchester and Blackpool are progressing well, and we will continue to work with the DfT and the WAG on developing plans to electrify the Valley lines. These schemes will be delivered by adopting modern and efficient high-output methods, and we will work in partnership with our suppliers and train operators to keep costs down and deliver better value, while minimising disruption for rail users.”
