Western Concourse nears completion at King’s Cross

The work to refurbish King’s Cross has been going on behind tall hoardings for about a year. Recently passengers using the north entrances to King’s Cross and St Pancras will have noticed the new Western Concourse roof starting to appear above those boards.

Designed by John McAslan and Partners, the curved, almost domed roof covers 6000m2 of floor space (including a mezzanine floor), and the white steel trusses have a combined weight of 1,350 tonnes.

All that is now in place and principle contractors Vinci Construction are busy installing the 2,280 aluminium and glass panels that will complete the roof surface. As can be seen in these photographs, taken on Thursday 10 March, they are about half-way through.

Once the roof is complete, the complex scaffolding structure that currently supports the roof, and which itself weighs 1,500 tonnes, will be removed revealing the true scale of the new King’s Cross Western Concourse.
