Network Rail work ramps up at New Street

Engineers working on the New Street Gateway project marked a significant milestone over the weekend as they demolished the old spiral ramp access between the Pallasades shopping centre and Stephenson Street.

The demolition is the first stage of the construction of a brand new entrance which will allow passengers to access the redeveloped station directly from Stephenson Street and New Street.

The new entrance will open at the completion of phase 1 of the project in 2012 when the first half of a redeveloped New Street station opens to passengers.

Upon completion of the project in 2015, the new Stephenson Street entrance will also be served by the Midland Metro extension from Snow Hill.
