Hammond attacks Tube strikes

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond condemned the planned Tube strikes yesterday in Parliament.

The Independent reported that Hammond said the strikes were “highly irresponsible” and warned the RMT that these strikes would only ‘lead to “tougher industrial relations laws.”‘

The RMT union has instructed its members to not sign on for duty on specified times between 16-20 May and 13-17 June.

The strikes will cause chaos for millions of commuters and visitors to London.

Tory Greg Hands reportedly named the strikes as “both obscene and irresponsible.”

The union said up to 1,500 Tube drivers will walk out for between 9 and 24 hours on the dates above.

The strikes are taking place due to the dismissal of two of the RMT’s members which they say is ‘victimisation.’ Both drivers are currently undertaking Employment Tribunals against London Underground for unfair dismissal.
