A crucial phase of work is underway to bring the new Metrolink line to Manchester Airport.

Utility diversions will be carried out over 2011, as part of delivering the new line from Chorlton to the airport.

Over this year during the upcoming work, there will be some traffic management measures at certain locations which will include road closures and lane restrictions.

The current works which incorporate significant traffic management are as follows:

  • A three-way traffic lights system is now in place on Southmoor Road / Ledson Road junction from Monday 2 May for approximately four weeks.

From Monday 9 May, there will be further lane restrictions to Moor Road / Altrincham Road, developing into a part road closure from Monday 16 May to mid-June 2011. This will be done in two phases:

  • Phase 1 – no access to Moor Road from Altrincham Road, with traffic diversions in place for approximately two weeks.
  • Phase 2 – no access to Altrincham Road from Moor Road, with traffic diversions in place for approximately three weeks.

From Monday 9 May, a one-way system will be in place at Hollyhedge Road for approximately 6 months.

From Monday 23 May, Nell Lane / Mauldeth Road West will have traffic management measures in place for approximately 3 months, although two-way traffic will be maintained. During this time, Nell Lane will be restricted to access only.

Signage will be in place when traffic management measures are in operation during utility diversions.

Philip Purdy, Transport for Greater Manchester’s Metrolink Director, said:

“This work is an essential part of bringing the new Metrolink line to Manchester Airport, one of the region’s largest employers. We would like to thank people for their patience while the utility diversions are underway.”

Leaving the South Manchester line just after the St Werburgh’s Road stop in Chorlton, the Manchester Airport line will run on nine miles of new track through Northern Moor, Baguley and Wythenshawe to Manchester Airport.
