DB Schenker Rail (UK) Ltd has welcomed the publication of the McNulty Value for Money Study into the railway for the Department for Transport and the Office of Rail Regulation, and the formation of a Rail Delivery Group.

Alain Thauvette, Chief Executive of DB Schenker Rail (UK) Ltd, said:

“At the heart of the McNulty report is the delivery of a national rail network that is efficient in both operations and costs.  The need of rail freight customers to use a national network is acknowledged and supported by the report.

“Through a national track access contract with a national infrastructure network that is consistent in its delivery of operations, timetabling and capacity management, rail freight growth and associated carbon reduction will occur.

“Rail freight is purely commercial, competing head to head with road haulage which uses the national road network.  We have successfully worked with Network Rail and other stakeholders to improve efficiency and lower costs over many years.

“We look forward to working with others in the industry through the Rail Delivery Group to realise the ambitions in the McNulty Review to deliver lower costs for the taxpayer and achieve greater efficiency for users.

“Success here will result in more freight by rail, something that the rail industry, our customers, the taxpayer and the Government wish to see.”
