Work starts to improve access at Denmark Hill station

Major improvement works to create a step-free route between the entrance and all four platforms at Denmark Hill station starts next week.

The project includes the installation of a new footbridge and three new lifts, which include CCTV and telephone links, to make it easier for everyone to use train services, especially those with reduced mobility, parents with young children or people with heavy luggage.

The first phase of the work is to remove vegetation from either side of the railway to make space for the new bridge. The major construction work is due to start from May.

Dave Ward, Network Rail’s route director for Kent, said:

“Improving access to stations is an important part of building a bigger and better railway. We want people to make their journeys by train, so need to make our stations as easy to use as possible. The new lifts and footbridge will achieve this help better meet the needs of passengers and businesses in Denmark Hill.”

Vince Lucas, service delivery director for Southeastern, said:

“We continue to be committed to making travel on the railway as easy and comfortable as possible. The work here at Denmark Hill is another important step in ensuring this and will be a real benefit for the local community, especially with King’s College Hospital so near by.”

The main construction work is scheduled to be completed in summer 2012.

Train services should be largely unaffected for the duration of the construction work, however Network Rail will be working closely with Southeastern to keep any disruption for passengers and line-side neighbours to a minimum.

  1. Actually, all those concreted and overhead walkways with numerous upward rising stairways with steel rails supply little aesthetic appeal to the station’s original classy Victorian architectural ambiance. Access routes to platforms, on the contrary, should be facilitated below ground so that a clear sweeping view is maintained along clear uncluttered platform lengths where that wonderful main outstanding station hall is fully appreciated.

    • You need to ask Southeastern about this – the loop line from London Bridge to Victoria is due to be re-routed to Clapham Junction from 8 December. If you use the Dartford service you will probably be ok – except trains might be packed first thing in the morning with all the commuters unable to use the loop.

There are also new plans to cut the number of services destined to go through or stop at Blackfriars.

  2. Hi

The lifts and walkway (and new station entrance to come) are really heavy looking, and ugly. The blue they have used is completely different from the paintwork elsewhere. The least they could have done is used a sympathetic colour – may be eventually they will paint it white – as the illustration, but I doubt it.
