Union announces further London Tube strikes

Listen to this article

Following a row over the sacking of one of its members, the RMT has announced further strikes on the London Underground.

An Employment Tribunal found RMT member Arwyn Thomas to have been ‘unfairly dismissed’ by London Underground because of his ‘trade union activities’.

However, the RMT claim that LU are refusing to ‘even discuss re-employing Arwyn Thomas’.

The dates announced for strike action are:

  • Between 21.01 hours on Sunday 19th June 2011 and 03.00 hours on Monday 20th June 2011.

Around half of all Tube drivers are members of the RMT, and all of these members have been ‘instructed not to book on for any duty’ between the said dates.

Following the strike action above, the RMT say they will then meet to review the action taken and prepare for ‘possible’ strikes on these dates:

  • Between 21.01 hours on Monday 27th June and 11.59 hours on Tuesday 28th June.
  • Between 12.00 hours on Wednesday 29th June and 11.59 hours on Thursday 30th June.
  • Between 12.00 hours on Friday 1st July and 21.00 hours on Friday 1st July.

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said:

“RMT has made every possible effort to get Arwyn Thomas back to work and it is the intransigence of LU management who have dragged their heels and failed to reach agreement over the past month, that has left us with no choice but to put this strike action on.”

London Underground have called the strikes ‘mystifying’.

  1. Thanks again, Bob ……… it’s a comfort to know we are also paying for your council house as well as losing a day’s wages when we can’t get into work.

  2. are the rmt willing to reimburse the money I have paid to see Liza Minnelli on the 29th but am now unable to go due to their action

  3. Bob Crow is a tw*at, all London Underground are Tw*ts. I wish they strike more & more. I love it. I can feel smug for being on my motorbike everyday, it cost me less than travelling on the overpriced, overcrwded, tw*t driven, delayed farce of a system…

    • I totally agree well apart from calling everyone years I am sure that most are decent people. But this strike is totally ridiculous, it’s Bad enough striking but to spread each strike over two days like they have is ludicrous and completely inconsiderate of the people who pay extortionate fares to use the service. I think bob crow forgets without us paying the fares none of then would have jobs. I think they also forget this is a service we pay for, it’s not free. I am going to investigate this from a legal stand point as the strike is losing me money, while at the same time I have paid for the service in advance. Compensation I believe should be paid to every affected traveller!

  4. Once again Bob Crow is using his bully-boy tactics in an effort to hold Londoners to ransom. What is really annoying is that the vote was made by a tiny percentage of the drivers and yet those who chose not to vote will still be forced to strike and lose pay defending a driver who was sacked on conduct grounds.

    Shame on you all.

    • Fred, no one is forced to strike. Anyone who disagrees with the reasons for this strike is free to come into work as normal.

For far too long the Unions have been allowed to get away with intimidation and victimisation of so called scabs and it’s about time the majority stood up for thier rights and took control of their union.
