A significant £1m contract for Hampshire-based Raymond Brown Construction (RBC) marks a step-up for the recently-formed rail division of the business.

New Rail Operations Director Tom Schofield will direct the project, which will see the demolition and reconstruction of the station booking hall and ticket office.

With more than 12 years’ rail industry experience, Tom has managed structures’ maintenance and project services across a number of high-profile clients including Network Rail, London Underground, Eurotunnel and train operators.

On being awarded the project at Basingstoke, Tom said: “Naturally the team at RBC is delighted to have been awarded this contract.

“There are great ambitions for the rail division and we already have a number of rail projects under our belt, but the nature of the work at Basingstoke represents a major achievement.

“It’s an extremely busy period as we drive the business forward. We are currently tendering for a number of schemes utilising our in-house resources which enable us to remain competitive.”

Awarded by South West Trains, the project to modernise Basingstoke station is part of the Major Projects programme to improve 14 stations.

The new look station hall will increase passenger capacity and feature a striking new stainless steel and glass frontage. The contract will also include renovation work to the clock tower at the station entrance and secure cycle parking facilities on both sides of the station.

Work at the station is due to start on site at the end of June with completion scheduled before the end of the year.

Temporary access and ticket office facilities will be provided adjacent to the current main entrance so that passengers will not be disrupted.
