London Underground says RMT should ‘call off Tube strikes’

London Underground’s MD, Mike Brown, wrote to Bob Crow yesterday to reiterate LU’s commitment to abiding by the employment tribunal’s ruling in respect of Arwyn Thomas.

London Underground say there is now ‘no reason whatsoever for the RMT to continue with its strike action, and yet the union has yet to call off the action.’

The letter to Bob Crow, General Secretary of the RMT asked him to ‘reconsider’ his union’s position ‘so that we can all calmly await the outcome of the Thomas Tribunal without further strikes’.

Mr Brown also ‘re-iterated’ his assurances to Mr Crow; ‘Once the Tribunal has run its course, we will respond and follow the direction that the Tribunal gives – specifically if the Tribunal rule to reinstate or re-engage Arwyn Thomas, then we will do so.’

A TfL spokesperson said:

“The RMT leadership should call off its threatened strike action, called in support of a member of staff dismissed for abusive behaviour towards his colleagues.

“The tribunal process, to which the RMT agreed, has not concluded and has made no findings, interim or otherwise.

“LU Managing Director, Mike Brown has written to the RMT’s Bob Crow again this morning, confirming that should the Employment Tribunal rule that Mr Thomas should be reinstated or reengaged, we will abide by that decision.

“There is therefore absolutely no justification for the RMT to continue to threaten Londoners with strike action.”

Should Sunday’s strike go ahead, TfL say they expect to run near normal service both on Sunday evening and Monday morning, with very little impact on customers.

The RMT has said LU is ‘undermining’ their campaign.
