A new partnership between a popular nature reserve and the Wales’ public transport company is encouraging visitors to travel by train and enjoy the wildlife of the Conwy estuary, illustrating that Llandudno Junction is the gateway to Snowdonia.

RSPB Cymru and Arriva Trains Wales are promoting visits to the RSPB’s Conwy nature reserve, close to Llandudno Junction railway station, where holders of a valid rail ticket are entitled to free refreshments at the nature reserve’s Waterside Coffee Shop.

Julian Hughes, Conwy reserve manager, said: “Since Conwy County Borough Council opened the path and cycleway to the nature reserve, visitors have discovered that a car isn’t the only way to get here. It’s greener and healthier to get the train and then walk or cycle here, and you can appreciate the wildlife and scenery from the estuary footpath.”

He added, “A young family of stoats has captivated visitors along the riverside this week – it’s amazing the wildlife you can find on your doorstep.”

Ben Davies, Stakeholder Liaison Manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We’re delighted to work with RSPB Conwy, who have produced posters to promote train travel to the reserve. Travellers can get to the reserve easily from the Conwy Valley, the North Wales coast and beyond, and now they can get a free drink at the end of the journey”.

Holders of a valid rail ticket for arrival at Llandudno Junction station are entitled to a free pot of tea or mug of filter coffee at the Waterside Coffee Shop on the day of travel. The initiative is a partnership of RSPB Cymru, Arriva Trains Wales and Conwy Valley Railway.
