A group of 27 local school children were given an extra special treat this week, when they met a life-like dinosaur at Carlisle station.

The prehistoric creature’s appearance was to celebrate Northern Rail’s partnership with Whitehaven’s Beacon Museum and the BBC Walking with Dinosaurs exhibition (11 June – 4 September 2011).

Northern Rail invited the class to meet the dinosaur, then to travel as its guests by train to Whitehaven. From the station they were lead to the museum, following dinosaur footprints on the pavement.

They were then treated to lunch and an exclusive tour of the exhibition by the Beacon Museum team, before heading back on the train to Carlisle for school closing time.

Kathryn O’Brien, Client and Stakeholder Manager for Northern Rail, comments:

“We are thrilled to be able to give these children such a fantastic experience, both here at Carlisle and at the museum.

“Our partnership with Beacon Museum sees those who travel there by train and present their tickets, receive 2 for 1 on museum entry prices, so hang on to your train ticket!”

Lucy Smith, Year Four teacher at Brook Street Primary School, added:

“The children have had such an amazing day, meeting this unbelievable dinosaur was definitely the highlight.

“We want to thank Northern Rail for organising this for us and giving these pupils something they will remember for a really long time.”

Claire Winter-Moore of the Beacon Museum, comments:

“The is a truly fantastic exhibition, 65 million years in the making! We have full-sized Dinosaur replicas, computer interactive games, as well as digital animations produced using full-scale models.

“It’s a great family attraction and an ideal day out for the forthcoming school holidays.”

2 for 1 tickets to the exhibition are available on production of valid train ticket and promotional leaflet, pick these up at Whitehaven and surrounding stations.
