Network Rail appoints new safety director

Network Rail has today appointed a new safety director, Gareth Llewellyn who has held very senior safety roles with National Grid plc, Anglo American plc and the Renewable Fuels Agency.

Announcing the news, David Higgins, chief executive, said:

“Gareth will be joining us at a time of great change when we need to make a further significant improvement to the safety culture of the business. His enormous experience across sectors and across the globe will be invaluable in delivering the changes needed.”

Mr Llewellyn said: “Nothing is more important in the rail industry than safety and I look forward to moving into this role and working with employees and other stakeholders to bring about a significant shift in safety culture and performance.”

Also leading Network Rail’s sustainability agenda, Mr Llewellyn added:

“A high quality and reliable rail network is essential for a sustainable, low carbon economy. Network Rail is the catalyst for delivering this in the UK and I aim to help the company realise its potential in this important area.”
