Assembly to debate High Speed 2’s potential impact on London

The London Assembly’s Transport Committee will hold a public hearing tomorrow to debate the effects proposals for the High Speed 2 rail link between London and the North could have on the capital.

Current plans for High Speed 2 involve extensive changes to ‘already busy Euston station’ in order for it to become a terminus for the new rail link – potentially ‘doubling passenger numbers’ – and the construction of a new interchange station at Old Oak Common.

The Assembly will discuss the impact would the new rail link have on the parts of London it will pass through, and on the capital’s existing transport network.

Transport Committee Members will question a range of guests representing the arguments for and against High Speed 2 alongside London transport operators.

The following guests have been invited to attend the meeting:

  • A representative from the Department for Transport
  • Adam Raphael, Campaign for High Speed Rail
  • Richard Hebditch, Campaign for Better Transport
  • Chris Stokes, 51M
  • Joe Rukin, StopHS2
  • Richard DiCani, Director of Strategy and Policy, Transport for London
  • Ed Wilson, Head of Affairs, Network Rail
  • Sanjay Jamuar, Senior Sponsor for HS2, Network Rail.

The Transport Committee meeting will take place on Thursday, 14 July from 10am in the Chamber at City Hall.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.

The Committee has also sought written submissions and undertaken a site visit to Euston and Old Oak Common prior to this meeting.

Tomorrow’s meeting will inform the Committee’s response to the Government’s consultation on High Speed 2, which closes on 29 July 2011.
