Oliver Heald, MP for North-East Hertfordshire, last week joined First Capital Connect and Fair Trade Letchworth to complete the new station gardens at Letchworth Garden City.

The gardens, which have been paid for by First Capital Connect and Fair Trade Letchworth, were planted in late June by local gardening groups and will form part of the town’s entry into the East Anglia In Bloom competition.

The gardens will also benefit from a new wormery, which FCC introduced last month at ten of its stations.

The wormeries work by leaving food waste in the worm containers, which eat the food and turn it into a bio-rich, high quality compost and concentrated liquid feed.

Speaking at the station Oliver Heald MP said:

“The gardens look fantastic and certainly brighten the station platforms up. I would like to thank First Capital Connect and Letchworth Fair Trade for funding this project and my congratulations to all those involved in the planting.”

Keith Jipps, FCC’s Customer Services Director, said:

“As the world’s first Garden City it is only right that passengers upon their arrival to the town are welcomed by the new community gardens at the station.

“Everyone involved in the project has worked extremely hard and I look forward to seeing the gardens flourish.”
