Planning train journeys has got easier thanks to the National Rail Enquiries website.

nationalrail.co.uk is the first train travel website of its kind to automatically search for alternative routes from nearby stations that could be either cheaper, quicker or offer fewer changes.

As well as highlighting the cheapest fares even more clearly, the updated journey planner from the website will also help passengers plan their train journey using a postcode.

Just enter a postcode and let the journey planner find the nearest train stations for you – ideal for anyone unsure of what the nearest station is they will be heading to or from.

And after listening to user feedback, fares and train timetable information is now displayed side by side on one page making it easier and quicker for passengers to compare different options for their journey.

The National Rail website is already the UK’s most popular destination for train and travel information.

Paid for and run by train companies, the website receives well over 15 million visits a month, helping millions plan and book their train travel.

Journey and fare tools already available from nationalrail.co.uk that already make it the number one destination for train travel information include:-

  • Live departure boards and TrainTracker text updates
  • Journey planners that provide real-time journey planning
  • Cheapest Fare Finder tool
  • Personalisable and downloadable timetables
  • Access to journey apps for smart phones
  • Journey alerts by text, Twitter or e-mail
  • Station information, including opening hours and car park information
  •  Ticket offers and special promotions
  • Hotel offers and deals

Chris Scoggins, Chief Executive of National Rail Enquiries, said:

“Our aim is always to provide rail passengers with the most comprehensive, easy to understand timetables and fares information possible.

“With millions of people travelling around the network every day, train companies cater for a wide variety of needs, from passengers wanting the quickest possible journey or the cheapest price to others who want to have fewer changes if they are carrying heavy luggage or have mobility issues.

“Our journey planner now allows passengers to see all the different options and to make the best choice for their particular journey.

“We continuously listen and respond to customer feedback to ensure the National Rail Enquiries website remains the leading one-stop rail travel website for the UK and we’re confident these latest improvements will make it even easier for the growing number of people choosing to travel by train to plan and book their journey.”
