National Express train operator c2c named a train ‘Southend – City-on-Sea’ on Friday 5 August, in support of the campaign for recognition of Southend as a city.
The Worshipful, the Mayor Councillor David Norman unveiled the newly named train, which is part of the c2c fleet operating train services on the London Fenchurch Street to Southend Central route.
The Worshipful, the Mayor of Southend-on-Sea, Councillor David Norman, said:
“I am very proud to have been called upon to name a train in honour of the borough’s bid for city status and delighted that c2c is supporting our campaign.
“This train will be seen by thousands of rail passengers every day and will be a fantastic advert for our town. It is sure to attract attention as it pulls into Fenchurch Street station.”
Southend is a city in all but name, the largest town in Essex, it offers the best of a traditional seaside resort and lots more including a vibrant cultural scene, history and heritage, key business and employments sectors, strong further and higher educational opportunities, an international airport and convenient links to the capital.
Ben Ackroyd, Engineering Director of c2c said:
“We are proud to support Southend’s city bid. Southend is a vibrant place, attracting over 6 million visitors a year; it is a key leisure market for us and also an easy commute into London.
“c2c is an integral part of the Essex community and we’re working with the Borough Council and local tourist organisations to promote and raise the profile of Southend.”
