Scomi Engineering Bhd, a subsidiary of Scomi Group Bhd, has announced that it has won a second monorail tender to provide design works, manufacture, supply and implementation of the monorail system for the 20 km monorail line for the city of Manaus in Brazil.

The Manaus Monorail project was awarded to the Consortium comprising of Scomi, CR Almeida S/A Engenharia De Obras, Mendes Junior Trading E Engenharia S/A , and Serveng-Civilsan S/A Empresas Associadas De Engenharia following a stringent and competitive tender process which was carried out by the Infrastructure Secretariat of the State of Amazonas in Brazil.

Earlier in June this year, Scomi announced that it had secured the RM2.6 billion Line 17 Sao Paolo Monorail project in Brazil together with its consortium partners, Andrade Gutierrez SA, CR Almeida SA Engenharia de Obras and Montagens e Projetos Especiais SA.

The Manaus Monorail will consist of 9 stations from Largo da Matriz to Jorge Teixeira and will involve the supply of 10 train sets consisting of 6 cars in each set.

The award is valued at BRZ Real 1.46 billion, of which Scomi’s portion is BRZ Real 342 million.

Under the Consortium, Scomi’s scope of works will involve the design and supply of rolling stock and depot equipment, design beam structure, supply maintenance vehicle, system integration and project management.

The Manaus Monorail project is expected to be completed in 40 months to provide efficient access to the airport, port, stadium, hotels, hospitals and other important locations especially during the 2014 World Cup hosted by Brazil.

Once completed the monorail line will be able to carry some 35,000 passengers per hour per direction (“pphpd”) to meet the expected demand.

Shah Hakim Zain, Group Chief Executive Officer of Scomi Group, said:

“2011 so far has been a great year for Scomi as we reach yet another milestone with this second monorail project in Brazil.

“This award will further strengthen our position for the 4 upcoming tenders in the next 12 months in Brazil. Our partners in Brazil are the two largest infrastructure companies in South America and we intend to harness this alliance to further our market presence there.”

“Together with our consortium partners, CR Almeida, Mendes Junior and Serveng, we are confident in successfully delivering the Manaus Monorail project in time for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil,” ended Shah Hakim.
