A Leith-based football club is kicking off the new season in style with brand new strips.

Leith Athletic under-13s Colts received the kit from FirstGroup, the UK’s largest bus and rail operator.

The club relies on fundraising events and donations from local businesses to pay for equipment and facilities.

FirstGroup made the £350 donation after under-13’s assistant coach Iain Miller, of Edinburgh, applied for funding for the football strips.

Iain – a mechanical fitter with FirstGroup subsidiary ScotRail, based at Haymarket depot – said:

“The boys were in need of a new strip. Playing in new kits rather than second hand ones will hopefully give them a confidence boost.

“We’re planning some more fundraising events and the donation has got us off to a great start.”

The funds will go towards new equipment, entrance fees for cup competitions and the hire of Ainslie Park Leisure Centre where the boys train during the winter months.

Arthur Pearson, head coach, was also delighted with the donation. He said:

“The club gives children of all ages the chance to get involved in sport within the local community – and we want to provide them with the best equipment and training possible.

“Our main priority is coaching the boys on their football skills in order to prepare them to take on other teams. Thanks to FirstGroup and Iain, they can do this every week.”

Avril Gill, FirstGroup‘s Marketing Manager, Group Brand, said:

“The funding gives this community boys club a welcome boost. We are often on the look out for opportunities to help at a local level and this is a perfect example of where we can do just that.”
