SAIL Bhilai plant to roll out high grade steel for rail wagons

The Steel Authority of India Limited’s (SAIL) Bhilai Steel Plant is developing special grades of steel plates used in the manufacture of railway wagons.

The new steel plates are customised for Titagarh Wagons, a government owned company, to manufacture high speed light freight wagons.

SAIL has completed an ‘impact toughness study’ on the high grade steel plates.

The company will supply forged thick web asymmetric rail to Indian Railways and ‘corrosion resistant grade of plate for the manufacturing of bogey frames for rail coaches to be used by BEML for the Delhi Metro project’.

It has also invested Rs 1,579 crore on the new blast furnace plant ‘8’.

After completion it will be rolling out 2.8 million tonnes of high quality steel products which will be used for wagons and boilers.

While inspecting the new site, Chairman of SAIL, C.S. Verma said SAIL will be investing Rs 17, 200 crore for modernisation and expansion.

He also reviewed work of the Universal Rail Mill project, which is being set up at the cost of Rs. 1,200 crore.

Verma revealed SAIL will also be investing Rs 10, 264 crore for the development of mines and would need more iron ore after expansion and modernisation.

Currently, it uses 23.7 million tonnes and after expansion, it will require 39 million tonnes.
