Punctuality on the railways reached 92.3% during period five, according to monthly performance data released today by Network Rail.

The data for Britain’s train services covers the period from 24 July 2011 – 20 August 2011. This compares to 94.2% for the same period last year. The moving annual average is now at 90.6%.

The measure of train punctuality also known as PPM (public performance measure) means trains arriving at their destinations within five minutes for commuter services and within 10 minutes for long distance services.

The best performing train operator was c2c who ran 97.1% of their services on time, down from 98.8% for the same period last year.

Other operators who performed well include London Overground, who ran 96.2% of trains on time, and Merseyrail who ran 95.7% on services to schedule.

The worst performing train operator for this period was Southern who ran 88.8% of trains on time, down from the 94.5% they ran to schedule for the same period last year. Their performance was ‘severely affected’ by the Thames Water burst main and landslide that closed the Brighton Main Line at the beginning of August.

Virgin Trains ran 89.1% of trains on time, and East Coast ran 89.2% of their services on time.
