Halcrow has been appointed by Network Rail to deliver travel plans for all of its 18 managed stations, including 11 London termini.
The objectives of the project draw on those of the Association of Train Operating Companies’ national pilot programme and Southern franchise commitment.
Halcrow will prepare a template station travel plan and guidance document and will advise and support nominated station travel plan coordinators as they work with local stakeholders to develop a station travel plan for each of the managed stations.
Paul Holloway, Halcrow’s principal transport planner explains:
“The 2007 Railways White Paper asked the rail industry to work with all relevant stakeholder groups to pilot station travel plans and provide advice on whether the travel plan approach could be beneficial to passengers.
“The pilot studies have demonstrated that there are considerable benefits to be gained.
“Initiatives to consider for passengers and station-based staff will include; clearer station and local destination signage; more attractive forecourts; developing pedestrian routes that make station access easier; introducing safer cycle routes and more secure cycle storage; and better use of station car parking.
“Our work will develop a template station travel plan and guidance document that will provide a structured approach and process.
“Each of the managed stations will have a plan that reflects the needs of its customers and takes account of local priorities.”
