Train operator East Coast is cutting the cost of upgrading to First Class on many of its trains at weekends, to encourage those who’ve not yet sampled its recently launched complimentary food and drinks service to try it for themselves.

From Sunday 4 September, customers travelling in Standard Class with East Coast between either London or Stevenage and destinations including Doncaster, Selby, Brough and Hull will see the price of upgrading on the day cut to just £15 per single journey, a 25% reduction on the current £20 upgrade.

Those whose journeys are wholly between Peterborough and any station to the north – including York, Leeds, Darlington, Newcastle and all East Coast destinations in Scotland – can also benefit from an upgrade to enjoy all the comfort and style of First Class for just £15 – also offering a 25% saving compared to the current £20 price.

East Coast Commercial and Customer Service Director Peter Williams said:

“We’ve been very encouraged by the positive reaction from customers who’ve sampled our new complimentary food and drinks service in First Class for themselves.

“Now we want to encourage more people who perhaps haven’t considered upgrading to First Class to give it a try.

“With reduced prices to upgrade to First Class and all the benefits including more comfortable and spacious accommodation, a recently introduced Quiet Coach, and of course our complimentary food and drinks service, we look forward to welcoming more new customers to enjoy First Class on East Coast.”

The new complimentary on-board service, featuring hot meals on weekday morning and evening trains, and the new Quiet Coach, has already helped the train operator to achieve a 24% rise in passenger journeys made in First Class since the improvements were launched on 22 May.

East Coast also launched a new timetable on 22 May, which added 117 extra services every week and more than three million additional seats to its route.
