London Midland ‘trains’ students on value for money

To celebrate the launch of its brand new ‘every 20 mins from less than £20’ service to London, London Midland has teamed up with local students to take part in a money-saving 20/20 challenge.

The soon-to-be undergraduates (working in pairs) have 4 hours to complete 20 tasks across Birmingham city centre, armed with £20 and their mobile phone as currency.

Throughout the challenge, the students are tweeting their progress (and asking for help) using the #londonmidland hashtag.

On completion of each task, competitors will also need to post a picture on London Midland’s new Facebook page.

David Whitley, Head of Marketing for London Midland, said:

“This is a treasure hunt with a modern twist, with social media giving it that extra dimension. Whilst you don’t have to hunt around to get cheap deals on our trains to London, we’re intrigued to see what lengths our teams will go to in a bid to save cash!”

Amy-Jane Sutheran, who starts at Birmingham City University studying Fashion Retail Management in October said:

“We’re really up for the challenge of showing how we can be resourceful with very little money – but I’m glad that I won’t have to put as much effort into getting a cheap deal to London during my course!”

As well as travel prizes for the winning teams, London Midland is offering all customers on its new services an extra 20% off any ticket to London when booked online via its website until 27 September, with extra discounts for railcard holders.

Advance fares now start at just £4.80 each way, with on-the-day prices as little £15.20 return.

Armed with just £20, the winners will be the team left with the most money at the end.

Each team will have to complete tasks listed below, plus many more, with £1 being deducted for any uncompleted task:

  • Get lunch containing fruit, veg, protein, carbs and dairy
  • Have a cultural visit
  • Take out a library book
  • Have a ‘freshen up’
  • Take a picture of a sign with the number 20 on
  • Have a photo taken with a member of London Midland staff
  • Swap an item of clothing with someone (not team-mates, not promo t-shirts)
  • Take a train ride on London Midland.
