British Transport Police (BTP) is appealing for information after a man was arrested following a bomb hoax at Darlington railway station on Monday, 12 September.

PC Andy Cook, of BTP based at Darlington station, said:

“Officers were called to the 1300 London Kings Cross to Edinburgh service around 4.20pm following reports of a man claiming to rail staff that there was a bomb on board the train.”

Officers swiftly arrested a 39-year-old man from Norfolk on suspicion of communicating a bomb threat and he was taken into custody.

The man was later released on police bail, due to return today, Friday, 30 September.

PC Cook added: “Bomb hoaxes are a very serious issue with the potential to cause massive disruption and economic harm, in addition to causing distress and fear to passengers and rail staff.

“BTP has a tried and tested system in place for dealing with them to cause minimum disruption whilst ensuring public and staff safety.

“Nevertheless, hoaxers waste considerable police time and divert much needed resources from other duties. The service was already slightly delayed due to severe weather conditions – a false claim such as this only delayed passenger’s journeys even more.

“As in this case, we will always thoroughly investigate bomb hoaxes and push for the maximum penalty against those involved.

“I’d ask for anyone onboard the service, who may have heard the man, or has any further information which can help police in their investigation, to contact us.”

Anyone with information is asked to British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 quoting background reference B5/NEA of 16/09/2011. Information can also be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
