EMD & Indian Railways to develop high-power locomotive

Listen to this article

EMD Locomotive subsidiary Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) has completed the design for a high-horsepower WDG5 locomotive to operate on Indian Railways.

The design was completed by the Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) and Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) of Indian Railways with the support of EMD.

The diesel locomotive has a power output of 5,500bhp combined with tractive effort of 560kn, meaning it will be the strongest diesel locomotive ever to run on the Indian rail network.

The locomotive will be able to pull significantly more load at higher speeds, enabling Indian Railways to ‘increase the system throughput in the rail network’.

The WDG5 locomotive includes electronic fuel injection, radial grids and high adhesion, lightweight fabricated bogies, and has modern driver interface and crew-friendly features, such as an air conditioned cab and toilet.

Glen Lehmann, Chief Marketing Officer, International, Electro Motive Diesel, said:

“EMD is committed to supporting Indian Railways in the development of future technology.”

The locomotive is the  first to incorporate salient features from the International Union of Railways (UIC) and Association of American Railroads (AAR) crashworthiness criteria and is a major step forward in safety, the EMD said.

EMD will also provide support services to Indian Railways’ locomotive facilities at multiple locations in Hubli, Sabarmati, Jodhpur, Siliguri, Lucknow, Gooty, Krishnarajpuram, Tughlaqabad, Pune, Itarsi and Raipur.
