A Giffnock man who has ‘adopted’ the local railway station was praised yesterday by ScotRail for his gardening prowess.
Max Bentley, 69, has been caring for plants at the station for three years under the train operator’s Adopt a Station scheme which aims to put stations at the heart of communities.
Kenny Scott, ScotRail’s Engineering Director, at the station to meet staff during a tour of the network, said:
“Max’s efforts have turned the station into one of the prettiest in East Renfrewshire and its surrounds.
“We hope others will follow his community spirit and adopt stations on the East Kilbride line.”
Max, who built raised beds for his plants, recently received a letter of thanks for his voluntary work from Provost Alex Mackie of East Renfrewshire Council.
Max, a retired blind-fitter, lives in Waterford Road, near the station.
He said:
“I wanted to make a real difference in my local area. I’m delighted that so many rail users are beginning to appreciate the impact of the garden, and would welcome offers of help from anyone willing to lend a hand.”
Mr Scott was accompanied by Pat Callaghan, Head of Facilities Management, during the visit.
