Ferny Grove commuters will soon benefit from a bigger and better train station.
Transport Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced that Queensland business Matrix Projects was award the contract for station and car park works starting November 14.
“This is great news for people who catch the train to and from Ferny Grove train station,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“The project will deliver better transport connections, improved reliability on the Ferny Grove line and a new station precinct at Ferny Grove.
“It will give commuters a new platform, station building, two bus interchanges and an upgraded car park with 1000 car spaces.”
Member for Ferny Grove Geoff Wilson welcomed the announcement.
“This news is welcome and well over due,” Mr Wilson said.
“I have championed the $100 million Ferny Grove Public Transport Hub for my constituents for many years and I’m looking forward to work starting as soon as possible.
“Work is set to ramp up in the next couple weeks to expand the car park and upgrade the station precinct to provide better transport options, improve reliability on the Ferny Grove line and tackle traffic congestion.
“My community wants action and it’s good to see that QR is finally getting moving.”
Ms Palaszczuk said the number of available car parks would need to be reduced temporarily while construction was underway.
“The construction program has been carefully staged to maintain the maximum number of car spaces at Ferny Grove station while we work to build a bigger, better station and car park,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“These works will cause temporary inconvenience to commuters but they will get long-term benefits from a bigger and better train station. However, around 500 car spaces will be maintained at the station at all times.”
Ms Palaszczuk said frequent and reliable bus services to Ferny Grove and Mitchelton stations would provide additional options for commuters during construction.
“The Department of Transport and Main Roads is working with Brisbane City Council to provide an additional off-site temporary carpark.” Minister Palaszczuk said.
“I would like to thank all Ferny Grove customers for their patience and understanding as we start work at the station.
Ms Palaszczuk said detailed maps would be placed around the station entrances to let commuters know when and where the changes would happen.
The Keperra to Ferny Grove Rail Upgrade is improving public transport for residents in Brisbane’s north-west suburbs. The $100 million project is scheduled for completion in 2012.
Queensland Rail will keep commuters and residents up to date about the changes to the station car park throughout construction.
