British Transport Police (BTP) detectives have launched an investigation after thousands of pounds worth of rail equipment was stolen from a compound close to Stratford rail station.

Investigators have also released CCTV of a group of men they would like to identify in connection with the incident which took place in the early hours of Monday, 10 October.

Detective Constable Graeme Knox, of BTP’s Criminal Investigation Department based at Stratford, said:

“We believe the thieves disguised themselves as rail workers to break into a compound, belonging to a rail contractor company, at Stratford rail station between 5:30am and 6am.

“During the burglary a large amount of tools, essential to the work being carried out at the site, were taken and operations were forced to cease while a police investigation was launched.

“The break-in also saw over £3,000 worth of damage caused to the site, including broken windows and vandalised door-locks.

Detectives have since viewed CCTV footage of the incident and have now isolated the images of six men they would like to speak to.

DC Knox added: “This was clearly a well-organised and premeditated burglary and I’d asked anyone who recognises the men pictured, or has any information regarding the incident to come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 quoting B11/LNA of 01/11/2011. Information can also be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
