Southern has walked away from the National Cycle Rail Awards with a win in the Best Station Travel Plan Measure for Cycling category for Purley station’s new £60,000 cycle facility.

Purley station was also Highly Commended in the Station of the Year Category.

The Awards, which are run by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC), celebrate the work being done by train companies, associated industry groups and individuals across the country to encourage the combined use of cycle and rail travel.

Following recommendations from Purley’s Station Travel Plan, a project designed to make access to the station easier was implemented.

Improved cycle parking was a priority and with only 10 spaces available for cycle parking at the front the station, the forecourt regeneration scheme was a key opportunity to improve facilities at the station.

The new cycle area has increased cycle parking availability by 600% taking the number of spaces from 10 to 60.

To fit in with the station environment, a modern stainless steel and glass structure has been installed providing space, light and weather cover.

In addition to increasing the number of cycle spaces, Southern ensured that the new facility was lit by energy efficient lighting and fully covered by CCTV.

Southern’s Franchise Improvement Director, David Scorey said:

“We are delighted to have won the award. The win and commendation are testament to the hard work and vision of Project Manager Paul Best and our industry partners.”

Mr Scorey added: “Purley’s Station Travel Plan identified the need for better access and cycle parking. The resulting new cycle parking facility and the improvements we have made to transport integration have paid dividends with the biggest winners being our passengers.”

Transport Minister Theresa Villiers attended the award ceremony and said:

“The Government is committed to encouraging cycling as a healthy and enjoyable way of getting around. It helps reduce congestion, gives people more opportunities for exercise, and it can play a part in the fight against climate change.

“This award ceremony recognises the significant achievements train companies and the industry has made towards meetings these goals.”

The Purley Station scheme has only just been completed but has already made a significant difference to transport integration at the station.

The improved and extended cycle parking facility is well used and blends well with the taxi rank, drop off point and accessibility parking.
