Minister of State for Transport the Rt Hon Theresa Villiers MP is to formally open Infrarail 2012 at the UK’s National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham on 1 May 2012.

On the same day, the Minister will deliver a keynote speech that will be a highlight of an extensive seminar programme running over all three days of the event.

Theresa Villiers has occupied her post since the Coalition Government took office in May 2010, having previously served as Shadow Secretary of State for Transport in Opposition.

With her extensive experience of a brief that includes rail policy strategy & projects and London schemes including Crossrail, the Minister’s remarks will be of great interest to an industry facing major opportunities but also significant challenges.

Infrarail 2012 is the essential event for everyone involved in railway infrastructure. Exhibitor numbers continue to grow, attracting suppliers from all sectors of the market.

Special exhibition features include The Yard, a newly introduced display area for plant and machinery used for rail construction and maintenance, and the On Track Display of smaller items of track plant, tools and equipment.

Staged in the main exhibition hall and open to all, the seminar programme is being arranged by Infrarail media partner the rail engineer magazine and will include presentations on both rail policy issues and technical topics.

Following a popular, well-established format, this programme is a key element of a range of activities at Infrarail intended to enhance the business value of the event for visitors.

Running from 1 to 3 May, Infrarail 2012 is supported strongly by Network Rail and is also endorsed by the Railway Industry Association, the Rail Alliance, the Rail Plant Association, the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers and the Permanent Way Institution.

Next year’s exhibition will be the ninth in this successful series of Mack Brooks events for the rail infrastructure sector in the UK.

The last show in 2010 saw a 5% increase in visitor numbers to more than 4,500 and a rise of 17% in the number of exhibitors to 239.
