A ticket to Park and Ride at Horwich Parkway

Passengers using Horwich Parkway rail station will soon benefit from even more parking spaces, following a successful bid to a national funding pot.

Transport for Greater Manchester has been awarded £220,000 from the Station Commercial Project Facility to take the total amount of parking available at the station from 163 spaces to more than 250.

The project will now be developed in full, with construction due to get underway in 2013.

Councillor Roger Jones, Chair of the TfGM Committee’s Capital Projects and Policy Sub Committee, said:

“We’re committed to finding ways to invest in Park and Ride sites across Greater Manchester because it makes the train a more realistic travel option for people who live a short drive from a station.

“So I’m pleased we’ve been successful with this bid, which will provide even more spaces at what is already a very popular station, and supports our proposals to expand Park and Ride at rail and Metrolink stations across Greater Manchester.”

Councillor David Chadwick, TfGMC member for Bolton, said:

“This is wonderful news for rail commuters at Horwich Parkway, who have demonstrated overwhelmingly that Park and Ride schemes are what is needed to encourage more people to travel by train.”

The Station Commercial Project Facility was launched by Network Rail and the DfT earlier this year.
