Anderson Precision Gearing Ltd, part of the Pailton Engineering Group based in Coventry, has been awarded a substantial manufacturing contract for suspension tubes to help extend the life of the Piccadilly Line fleet of motorised underground rail cars.

The contract will run throughout 2012 and into 2013 and will help keep the existing fleet running up to 2022.

This is a real boost to APG and its workforce and reinforces them as a major supplier to the rail traction industry.

The contract is the largest ever in the Scottish firm’s history and marks its remarkable resurgence since being acquired by Pailton in December 2010.

Clive Brimmell, Sales Manager, APG, said:

“We are delighted to have won this prestigious contract which demonstrates the high regard in which the generations of engineering expertise within APG are held.

“Rail is an important market for APG and we look forward to expanding our operations in that area.”

In the past three months APG has received orders of more than £1.3 million from a range of customers.

Areas showing particular activity and growth include heavy automotive, mining, oil and gas and specialist engineered components, as well as rail.

Fortunes have changed for the engineering firm which just over a year ago was facing provisional liquidation until Pailton, which specialises in the design and manufacture of steering systems, acquired it in December 2010.

The healthy order book only supports the underlying strengths of the company which first attracted Pailton to the acquisition.

APG was seen to be a complementary fit to Pailton, one which would enable the Coventry firm to expand into growing markets such as renewable energy and rail.

Since the acquisition, Pailton has invested heavily in APG, upgrading equipment to increase quality and turnaround times, and winning back skilled and experienced staff who had previously been laid off.

The company is also actively looking for both larger more modern premises within the area for APG, which has been manufacturing on the site since 1899.
