Last week ten young people started with Southeastern as part of the Government’s apprentice initiative.
Aged between 16 and 19, each will be paired with a station manager and allocated to a specific region of the network.
This 12 months structured development programme includes getting work experience on gate-line, platform and ticket office work as well as gaining National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) level 2 in customer services.
The apprentices will be supervised at all times and will have station staff ‘buddies’ helping and guiding them.
They will also receive weekly mentoring from their station manager and be completing a work book throughout the year.
Vince Lucas service delivery director said:
“We’re pleased to be taking part in this apprentice scheme and welcoming these 10 young people to work with us for the year.
“We expect to learn from them as well as the other way round. There are many good careers to be had working for railway companies so we hope this is their first step towards that.”
The apprentices will be working 35 hours a week between 7am and 7pm Monday to Friday and paid the standard Government apprentice wage of £95 per week.
