Tube drivers to strike on Boxing Day

Listen to this article

The union Aslef has said its members have voted ‘overwhelmingly to take action on Boxing Day’ in a row over pay.

The union demanded triple pay and a day off in lieu to work on Boxing Day, but the requests have been refused.

The union balloted its 2,200 Underground drivers and they returned a 92.3% vote in favour of action.

The union says its members require ‘substantial incentives’ to turn up to work on Boxing Day.

Transport for London has said the ‘threat of strike action will not achieve anything’.

If the dispute is not resolved, the union says it intends to take further action on 16 January and 3 and 13 February.

Last year, services on Boxing Day were severely disrupted after drivers walked out.

  1. They ought to be thankful they have jobs to go to. I don’t see the electricity workers, hospital staff, military etc. going out on strike because they have to work bank holidays. The Underground is a service industry and as such should provide the service when demanded. If the train drivers insist on going out on strike at the drop of a hat, it will bring driverless trains all the sooner then they can have all days off (though without any pay)!

  2. Greedy union b*stards holding LUL, the people of London, and the government to ransom. Nothing new there then. The union barons want to wake up and smell the coffee. Safety my arse. They only act in their own selfish interests. The public does not support them, and they (the unions) should be feeking ashamed of themselves. Roll on driverless trains on the LUL.

  3. I fully agree with comment No 2. They should be glad to have a job; as it is they are amply rewarded for the work they do. Let’s face it – it’s all about greed!! Apart from the fact that members are badly led by a political motivated left wing leadership that want to cause as much disruption to the general public. Is the the leadership taking a cut in pay from their five and six figure inflated salaries for the strike action they have asked theit membership to forego? I bet not.
