Stormy weather disrupts East Coast services

Listen to this article

High winds of up to 95 miles per hour are affecting services on the East Coast Main Line this morning – particularly those travelling within Scotland and on cross-border services.

Passengers travelling north of Newcastle are being advised not to travel today.

Network Rail, which manages Edinburgh Waverley station, has closed the building to trains and passengers for safety reasons.

The Forth and Tay Rail Bridges have been closed, while all services to and from Glasgow Central’s main line platforms have also been suspended.

Train services are currently suspended on East Coast’s routes north of Edinburgh, to and from destinations including Dundee, Perth, Aberdeen and Inverness.

East Coast ticket holders are advised to travel on their booked services where available.

Tickets for journeys north of Newcastle which have been suspended or cancelled because of the weather conditions will be accepted for travel tomorrow (Wednesday 04 January 2012) without restriction.

Most scheduled services south of Newcastle, and on East Coast’s route between West Yorkshire and London, are operating, although some delays were caused earlier this morning following signalling problems between Newark and Retford.
