Leicestershire school considers subsidising pupils’ rail travel

Humphrey Perkins School in Leicestershire is considering subsidising train travel for its 51 pupils living in Sileby following council cuts that have decimated bus subsidies resulting in the axing of the free school bus.

The school, located in Barrow-upon-Soar is currently in talks with East Midlands Trains and ‘would expect parents to contribute £1.05 a day towards the train fare, compared to £2 a day for a dedicated school bus’.

In a statement, Leicestershire City Council said that the walk between the two villages was suitable for children, a claim denied by the school and many parents because of the narrow pavements and 40mph traffic that uses the busy route.

One parent said: “The road is far too narrow and the traffic travels at speed. I’ve no doubt a child will be clipped by passing traffic.”

School staff will be on hand at Barrow station in the morning and afternoon to help pupils.
