Balfour Beatty to reconstruct bridges in GN/GE upgrade scheme

Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering (BBRCE) has been awarded a £9 million contract for works on the GN/GE Upgrade Scheme Packages B and C by Network Rail.

The design and construct contract requires the reconstruction of 18 overbridges on the GN/GE route in order to reduce freight congestion on the East Coast Main Line between Peterborough and Doncaster and is part of a wider scheme that requires track alignment modifications, underbridge reconstruction and level crossing works.

All of the 18 three span brick arched overbridges will be reconstructed in order to improve clearances and allow the transfer of freight trains to the GN/GE line.

Wherever possible the reuse of existing sub structures, abutments and wing walls will be investigated.

The programme is expected to last two years.

The project itself will be ‘logistically challenging so forward planning of the works will be critical in utilising planned rail possessions in order to complete the programme’.
