The Victorian Government’s Regional Rail Link Authority has awarded Leighton Contractors, in a joint venture with Baulderstone, a $505 million contract to design and construct part of the Regional Rail Link project.

Regional Rail Link is a major new rail line that will run from West Werribee to Deer Park and through Melbourne’s western suburbs to Southern Cross Station.

By separating regional trains from metropolitan trains, Regional Rail Link will give Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat trains their own dedicated tracks through the metropolitan rail system, freeing up space for additional suburban services.

The Baulderstone Leighton Joint Venture will deliver the greenfield segment that runs between Deer Park and West Werribee Junction.

The works include 25 kilometres of new broad gauge double railway track with a design speed of 160km/h and two new railway stations at Tarneit and Wyndham Vale.

Also included in the project are a number of grade separations and new rail bridges. Peter Ryan, Leighton Contractors’ General Manager of Construction in Victoria, said:

“This new contract strengthens our relationship with the Department of Transport and extends our capability in the rail sector.

“Leighton Contractors has significant experience in the delivery of major infrastructure projects and we are excited by the opportunity to work with our joint venture partners to deliver an outstanding project for the people of Victoria.”

Design work will commence in January 2012.
