Stark warning over rocks thrown at trains

British Transport Police (BTP) investigators are sending a ‘stark warning to youths’ in Lincolnshire, after two trains were struck by rocks in the area.

The incidents, which took place over the past week, caused the train windows to smash.

Around 2.55pm on Thursday 12 January, a rock was thrown at a Nottingham to Skegness service as it passed through the Ancaster area, breaking straight through the window and hitting a passenger.

An ambulance was called, however the victim, a man from Croft, continued with his with journey. He was left with a ‘lump and reddening to his head’.

Again on Monday, 16 January, a concrete slab about 20cm in length was thrown at a passing train at Honington level crossing at 7.45pm.

Although the slab didn’t hit any passengers, the window smashed, covering a passenger in glass.

Inspector Graham Bridges, of BTP, said:

“These types of incidents are very serious and can cause not only damage to trains but injuries to passengers. Luckily no-one here was seriously injured.

“We’ve made a number of local enquiries into the incidents including visiting many of the local residents, arranging school visits highlighting the dangers of throwing objects at trains and we will be stepping up patrols in the area to catch and deter these vandals.

“I would warn students in the area who think playing near the railway is fun that they are not only risking their lives, but also a criminal record.

“If anyone saw thing suspicious, or if any parents or adults noticed their children acting strangely, to please come forward.

“Parents and adults must also take responsibility – especially during school holidays – to emphasise the dangers to your children. If you live near the railway, ask yourself if you know where your children are playing or hanging around.”

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact BTP on 0800 40 50 40, quoting incident reference B15/NEA of 18/01/2012. Or call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
