Anna Beninati, 18, from Sandy, Utah, has spoken after losing her legs whilst trying to jump onto a moving freight train four months ago.
The teenager was studying music therapy at Colorado State University in Fort Collins when she tried to board the 18mph train with three male friends last September in Longmont.
Anna said she had ‘train hopped’ over ten times before but this train was ‘moving a lot faster’ than others she had jumped on.
The teenager slipped and fell, watching her legs get crushed under the 118 car freight train.
“I remember looking down at my leg dragging on the ground and I saw how fast the wheels were turning and how fast the rails were going by,” she said, reported the Longmont Times-Call.
“It almost occurred to me, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, I am gonna get’… and then it happened. I remember sitting there looking at my legs.”
Anna told the Longmont Times-Call, “I remember looking down at my leg dragging on the ground and I saw how fast the wheels were turning and how fast the rails were going by.
“I witnessed the whole entire thing. I have vivid memory of the entire thing.”
The teenager went on to thank her rescuers, including her friend Charlie Hamilton, a former Army medic.
Since September 5, 2011, Beninati has had 11 operations on her legs.
