The state government of Delhi has given the approval ‘in principle’ for the first monorail system in Delhi.

It is thought the transit system will link to three Delhi Metro lines and could start operations in 2017.

A feasibility study was carried out by engineering consultants RITES Ltd.

The 10.8 km monorail system will connect Shastri Park with Laxmi Nagar via Trilokpuri and will have 12 stations.

An official spokesperson said:

“Laying of monorail lines is cheaper as compared to Delhi Metro lines. As monorail will be plying above narrow lane in congested locality, straddle type elevated monorail will be able to negotiate sharp curves.”
