Birse Metro awarded Tube cooling contract

Listen to this article

Birse Metro has been awarded a contract to provide a Water Cooling System at London Underground’s Oxford Circus station.

The system will serve 14 new Passenger Air Handling Units (PAHUs) located on six platforms at the station.

The contract, part of the ‘Cooling the Tube’ programme, includes the supply of new mechanical and electrical equipment (M&E) which will be installed and commissioned by Balfour Beatty Engineering Services.

Existing equipment on the roof of Western House, which is located directly over Oxford Circus station, will be decommissioned and removed before structural steel strengthening works are carried out to accommodate the new chiller units. New pipework will connect the chillers to the new plant room via existing ventilation shafts.

On completion of the structural steelwork, the floor space below the roof will be refurbished for use as an office.
