A new information panel has been installed at Linlithgow Station to record its claim to be the first station in the world to have been photographed.

The photograph was taken in 1845 by David Octavius Hill.

The panel also celebrates more recent additions to the station. These include a mural of the annual Marches procession, the flower tiles made by local schoolchildren, and three embroidered banners from the Parish Church.

The panel has been developed jointly by Linlithgow Civic Trust, Pride & Passion Linlithgow and Linlithgow Heritage Trust, with support from ScotRail, the train operator, and West Lothian Council.

Present at a commemoration of the panel on 17th February were John McGregor and John Aitken of the Linlithgow Civic Trust, railways author Harry Knox with the new plaque and ScotRail’s external relations manager John Yellowlees who considered it to be “surely be the most informative and interesting panel to be found at any Scottish station.”

The Civic Trust’s “Burgh Beautiful” campaign has adopted Linlithgow Station as part of ScotRail’s Adopt a Station scheme which aims to put stations at the heart of their communities.
