Classic Locomotives of Scotland are featuring on Royal Mail’s latest stamp issue.

The collection, issued on 8 March, is the second in a series of four celebrating the country’s illustrious rail history.

The £1 stamp in this issue shows the Bon Accord in its later years working along Aberdeen’s Miller Street in June 1962. The Andrew Barclay No. 807, Bon Accord was built in 1897 and belonged to the Aberdeen Gas Works.

The stamps also feature images of the Glen Falloch and Glen Loy, two engines appearing on the 1st class stamp, the Andrew Bain and the Clan Mackinnon, which was one the last Highland Railway locomotives to remain in active service.

Royal Mail joined forces with railway expert Professor Colin Divall of the National Railway Museum in York, and Scottish railway expert Dugald Cameron, to select the four locomotives featured.

Engines such as the Clan Mackinnon were carefully chosen from thousands of period photographs.

Philip Parker, Royal Mail Stamps spokesperson, said:

“Scotland has an incredible railway heritage, not just in terms of its locomotive production, but also its iconic structures such as the Forth Bridge, then the world’s first major steel structure.

“We hope that the four locomotives featured will remind people that behind the glamour of the passenger locomotives, these ‘servants of steam’ were busy building a new Scotland.”
