RailCorp is consulting with local residents about the construction of communication masts in the rail corridor between Carlton, Port Kembla and Dunmore as part of a critical safety system recommended by the Waterfall train accident inquiry.

The communication masts support a new Digital Train Radio System (DTRS) being installed across the electrified network, replacing old analogue radios.

The train radio system will be installed at 17 locations, including: Albion Park, Bellambi, Bulli, Carlton, Coniston, Dapto, Dunmore, Fairy Meadow, Flinders, Hurstville, Kembla Grange, Lysaghts, Port Kembla North, Thirroul, Unanderra, Wollongong, and Yallah.

RailCorp has engaged UGL Infrastructure Pty Ltd to design, construct and maintain the new radio network.

RailCorp Project Manager Tony Cunningham said new masts need to be erected by the rail line to allow the DTRS to operate.

“A Review of Environmental Factors for the sites is now on display at these locations and available on the RailCorp website, with feedback being collected for three weeks. We have also been speaking with local residents about the initiative,” Mr Cunningham said.

“The masts will be between 10 and 30 metres tall, with most around 20 metres tall, and will include a concrete base and some equipment cabinets. Where possible, the project will look to add the new technology to existing structures.”

Construction for the DTRS has started at the first six sites including Sutherland, Engadine, Loftus, Waterfall, Heathcote and Goomera Ridge.
